As a site that sells only plant-based products, it may seem absurd to consider this question. However, many of us grew up believing meat was part of a healthy diet, and it’s a common argument for those who believe meat, eggs, or dairy are necessary for protein or other nutrients. 


In this blog, we’ll prove it’s absolutely possible to live (and thrive!) on a plant-based diet by discussing the major reasons why humans aren’t wired to consume meat.


Our bodies aren’t made for consuming flesh.


Carnivorous animals have sharp, blade-like teeth that can reach up to 7 cms.—perfect for slicing meat, which is the first indication we aren’t wired to eat meat. Our canines (teeth) are small and blunt, and have no chance of chewing through rawhide. Carnivorous animals also have claws that rip apart prey and can tear off chunks of raw meat; we have short and soft fingernails. These animals also have more acidic stomachs than we do to help them digest flesh quickly. Their shorter intestines allow for the rapid digestion of rotting meat.


For example, wolves mainly eat the meat of large prey such as elks. They consume nutrient-dense organs first, then muscle tissue. When carnivores eat saturated fat from meat, it does them no harm, while saturated fat clogs up our arteries.


Herbivorous animals chew from side-to-side and have longer intestines to absorb nutrients. Like them, our saliva contains amylase, an enzyme that helps to digest starchy carbohydrates found in bread, rice and other whole grains. Carnivores don’t spend as much time chewing, nor do they require amylase in saliva to consume carbs. Their jaws move open and shut and do not move from side to side as ours do.

Today’s meat is linked to illnesses and diseases.


People who eat a Paleolithic (Paleo) diet argue that it’s best to eat what our ancestors did: lean meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, but no dairy, grains or pulses. However, evidence shows our diet included a varied plant-based diet with root and leafy vegetables celery, figs, nuts, seeds and chenopodium seeds (similar to quinoa), and roasted vegetables rich in carbs similar to modern potatoes. Only in recent times did we switch to relying heavily on animal foods.


Today’s meat is linked to a wide range of health problems, including strokes and chronic diseases: diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and obesity. The typical Western diet, which includes dairy and processed meats, is linked to illnesses and diseases. Adhering to a Paleo diet today wouldn’t be the same as it was millions (or even hundreds) of years ago.


Humans have weaker stomach acids, similar to those found in animals who digest pre-chewed fruits and vegetables. Without the stomach acids of carnivorous animals to kill bacteria in meat, animal foods can give us food poisoning and other food-borne illnesses. In the US alone, food poisoning affects over 48 million people and kills over 3,000 annually.


We can get most of the nutrients we need on a plant-based diet.


Contrary to the argument that you need meat for protein, all the amino acid proteins we require are available in plant-based food. According to the CDC, people in North America are more likely to consume too much protein, resulting in increased risk of heart disease, nutritional deficiencies, insufficient fibre,  or worsened kidney function in those with kidney disease. 


As we’ve talked about in previous blogs, when humans transition from an animal-based to a fully plant-based diet, their intake of vitamins and other nutrients improves. The only exception is vitamin B-12, found in meat, eggs and dairy. However, you can get vitamin B-12 through a supplement. Our bodies function well on plant-based foods full of fibre, antioxidants, unsaturated fat, essential fatty acids, phytochemicals, and cholesterol-free protein.


The average life expectancy in ancient times was around 30 years. Our bodies adapted over time to suit a plant-based diet by producing more amylase in our saliva. We also adapted to build long-chain fatty acids (found in nuts, seeds and their oils), which is important for cognitive function and brain development. Eating meat allowed our ancestors to survive in areas where—and during periods in which—plant-based foods were scarce.
